Heron Pond

Heron Pond, located near Belnap, Illinois, is a beautiful Designated Illinois Nature Preserve. My favorite thing about this trail is that you get to see so many different landscapes in such a short hike. Before you start your hike even, you first drive through a typical Southern Illinois small town (read: tiny) and see how us “common folk” live. We have our gardens (fenced to keep the deer out!) our rural homesite, and we are just trying to get by. As you travel to the trail head, you see parts of the Tunnel Hill Trail running parallel to the country road that takes you to the Heron Pond/Little Black Slough Trailhead. If you are up for a long hike or love to ride “rails to trails” this trail is wonderful. Finally, you end up at the trail head, off of Heron Pond Road.
Tunnel Hill State Trail

Southern Illinois' Tunnel Hill State Trail is a gem of a route with 23 trestle bridges (including one that is 450 feet long), several ghost towns, a beautiful park, a comfortable trailhead in Vienna Station, and, of course, its namesake tunnel, an impressive corridor that once measured 800-feet-long until a collapse in 1929 shortened it by some 300 feet .
The first railroad tracks laid on this corridor caused such a stir that in 1870, local farmers, anticipating shipment-ready crops, planted orchards even before the line's tunnel was complete...

Cache River Wetlands Center

Cache River State Natural Area is situated in southernmost Illinois within a floodplain
carved long ago by glacial floodwater of the Ohio River. When the Ohio River adopted its present course, it left the Cache River to meander across rich and vast wetlands. Among the outstanding natural features found within the area today are massive cypress trees whose flared bases, called buttresses, exceed 40 feet circumference. Many are more than 1,000 years old, including one that has earned the title of state champion bald cypress because of its huge trunk girth, towering height and heavily branched canopy.
